Anika Prather (Johns Hopkins University) and Angel Parham (University of Virginia) will be presenting on their new work, The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature. Prather, founder of Living Waters School, and Parham, founder of the Nyansa Classical Community, make the case that classical educators and students ought to engage the great, classically educated writers and artists of the Black American tradition.

Ruth Naomi Floyd presents “Frederick Douglass Jazz Works,” created in honor of Frederick Douglass (1818-1895). In this work, Floyd and her ensemble present jazz comprising her original compositions paired with the actual words from the speeches and writings of this powerful, timeless luminary. “Frederick Douglass Jazz Works” illuminates the themes of tragedy, grief, despair, and the injustice of American slavery through the multi-faceted prism of hope, joy, perseverance, and triumph.
