Reclaiming a Culture of Play & jUgAaD*
In these times when what dominates our screens and sometimes our streets is something else, we are remembering and reclaiming our culture: of interconnectedness, of play, of the JuGaAd that has been a legacy of this land and all its people. We are making magic, meaning, small mercys and more out of whatever we've got. To stay alive and to thrive.
We sing and tell stories including their-story, her-story, his-story. We play with hiding and being seen, we play with balance and being off centre. We laugh, cry, shout, whisper and sigh. We stand up, sit down & sit still, we leap, crawl & shuffle. We play with rules- following, bending, breaking. We play with plans and events even when they fall apart. We know and we remind ourselves to play with everything, in between and beyond.
We welcome and honour it all. We play and do all kinds of jugaad to remember who we are, to remember the breadth and depth of our connectedness and to remember our strengths.
*jugaad (जुगाड़) is a word from the Indian subcontinent that refers to unconventional innovations including simple fixes or workarounds, creative solutions that bend the rules, or use resources to make things work or make something new with meager resources.
In this past year we have played with survivors of gender based and sexual violence, queer folks, intergenerational bodies, adolescents, parents and children, the elderly and sometimes a mix, climate and social justice activists, development and community workers, educators, counselors and therapists, artists, women's groups, and in collaborations with other programs and offerings, planned and impromptu.
