According to Feeding America, 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 5 children in North Carolina struggle with hunger. MANNA FoodBank has been fighting food insecurity in Western North Carolina for 42 years. But after Hurricane Helene, things got even worse.
The storm led to a devastating loss of life, destroyed thousands of homes, and damaged tens of thousands more. Millions of North Carolinians lost access to basic services like water, electricity, and even healthcare. When entire communities lost access to these essentials, food insecurity rose rapidly — and organizations like MANNA are working tirelessly to fill the gaps for families who suddenly have nowhere else to turn.
I’m cycling across America — from Washington State to Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Ending the ride at the Statue of Liberty feels fitting, as she stands as a symbol of freedom, hope, and friendship. I believe America has a deep capacity for care and generosity. As I pedal across the country, I look forward to meeting all the open hearts and open roads that make America what it is.
I’ll be crossing 16 states over the course of 80+ days, raising awareness and learning about the growing food insecurity in the U.S Please donate whatever you can — together, we can make the world a better place.
My name is Mufaddal Fidahussein, and I’m a nursing student at USC Upstate in South Carolina.
I believe small acts of care can lead to big change.
This ride is one of mine. Thanks for being part of it. ❤️
