New Wheelchairs for Athletes in Need!

$52 of $150,000

We are seeking to raise $150,000 to support the urgent and ongoing mobility and medical needs of our athletes.

Custom manual wheelchairs typically cost $8,000–$11,000, with power-assist attachments ranging from $3,500 to more than $10,000. These costs do not include critical components that wear out over time—such as backrests, tires, brakes, and seat cushions—which often require frequent replacement and can add thousands of dollars in additional expenses.

Currently, two athletes are in immediate need of new custom wheelchairs and power attachments, while many others require essential repairs or replacement parts in order to remain mobile, independent, and active in their communities.

Olympic gold medalist Sam Willoughby, who sustained a life-altering injury in 2016, has since married fellow Olympic medalist and world champion Alyse Willoughby, and together they recently welcomed a baby boy. Today, Sam coaches BMX racers and remains deeply involved in the sport. To continue his work, he requires a fully custom-built wheelchairthat is lightweight enough for frequent travel, yet durable enough for daily use on BMX tracks. In addition, Sam needs power-assist attachments that allow him to navigate hills, reach start gates, and move throughout race venues independently.

Former professional motocross racer Michael Mays, also injured in 2016, has gone on to become a leading adaptive motocross athlete. He has earned second place overall at the Pastrana Pro Challenge, received an invitation as an alternate to the Winter X Games in Aspen, and built a substantial social media following that inspires riders worldwide. Michael currently needs a replacement power attachment. Road 2 Recovery was proud to provide his original unit several years ago, but it is now worn beyond repair and must be replaced to keep him competing and training.

Beyond mobility equipment, many athletes rely on ongoing durable medical supplies, including catheters and related items, that are not covered by insurance and can total hundreds of dollars per month per athlete.

A fundraising goal of $150,000 will allow us to meet these immediate needs while also reserving funds to respond quickly to future requests—ensuring no athlete is ever left without the equipment and support they depend on.

Every contribution makes a difference. No amount is too small.
